Imagine........
taking your children or grandchildren,
into a magnificent bush area
where native trees tower above you,
where the creek runs clear
and the native birdsong is plentiful.
The hut is located in Matai Bay, Tennyson Inlet, Pelorus Sound and is accessible by boat only, the nearest boat launching ramps are in Duncan, Penzance and Elaine Bays. There is a registered mooring available adjacent to the hut for hut users exclusive use, at their own risk. The hut is approximately one hour kayaking from Duncan Bay and a similar time from both Penzance & Elaine Bay. Water taxies can be arranged from Havelock and Tennyson Inlet.
DOC had intended to relocate this hut to Nydia Bay for a warden's hut, however a group of enthusiastic people negotiated an agreement with Department of Conservtion to take over the funding and management to retain this gem. This is the only beachfront hut remaining in the Marlborough Sounds area.
This hut is now managed by the Matai Bay Hut Trust for the Department of Conservation
